Book of the Week
Succeeding Against the Odds: The Autobiography of a Great American Businessman By John H. Johnson
This is one of my favorite books, as the wisdom in it always provides value to me.
John H. Johnson was an American entrepreneur who rose from the Depression-era and Jim Crow south to become not only one of the most successful Black businessman in American history but one of the most successful businessmen period;
He was the founder of Johnson Publishing Company, which made Ebony and Jet magazines and had various business holdings. Served on the board of directors of several major businesses and - In 1982, became the first black person to appear on the Forbes list, which documents top wealthy individuals in the country.
These are Major accomplishments now - so imagine how it was back then when he was alive.
There's so much involved in his story -- but on this read, my takeaways are;
There's an advantage in every disadvantage and a gift in every problem.
Johnson mentions there comes a moment in every person's life when they stand at an intersection of 2 roads, one of which leads up and the other down. And that choice they make at that moment defines them forever.
--These are choices we face - do you build your dream or do you languish chasing the opposite.--
Johnson says there were only two choices before him, and he had to choose. The choice between security and insecurity. Between the known and unknown, he had to decide whether he would hang on to the devil he knew or whether he was going to turn loose, without a safety net, and freefall to danger, destiny, wealth, or death. -- Of course, he chose the path of insecurity and made it work.
He said, "I believe that living on the edge, living in and through your fear is the summit of life and that people who refuse to take that dare condemn themselves to a life of living death."
Definitely a must-read.
