Notes/Observations
Parkinson's Law
What is Parkinson's Law?
Parkinson's Law is the old adage that work expands to fill the time allotted. Simply put, If I give you 24 hours to complete a project, the time pressure forces you to focus on execution and you have no choice but to do only the bare essentials. The term was first coined by Cyril Northcote Parkinson in a humorous essay he wrote for the Economist in 1955.
I find Parkinson's law useful because I tend to take on many things that interest me and they have a long time horizon. That “time” sometimes extends to forever as I will procrastinate on the task because there is no deadline. I have come to realize that you need a deadline on what you consider important in your life.
If I want to write my book don’t wait for years to get all the material. Instead, shorten the timeframe and work with focus and my book will be made.
If I want to get a healthier start now and have a deadline for gains.
If I want to create a course, start with the end in mind and get moving asap.
This law applies everywhere.
Use it to your advantage.

Wednesday, April 21, 2021 - If we really want to encourage behavior (or belief) change in others we actually need to move away from advice-giving (especially when our advice is unsolicited) and toward modeling.

Book of the Week
The Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene
The theme of this book is just how irrational and unreasonable human beings are.
Humans are no doubt social animals whose lives depend on our relationships with others.
Our own skills are not enough, we need to know why people do what they do and understand it in order to survive and thrive in this world.
Robert Greene’s book takes ideas from Martin Luther King Jr, John D Rockefeller, Anton Chekhov Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, and many others to teach us what he considers to be critical to surviving humanity.
Detachment from our own emotions, self-control, and how to not conform to what everyone else wants us to be is key.
Overall a good read. This book is not my favorite Robert Greene book but is very useful. I would say this is a book you keep going back to as a reference instead of a straight-up read.
