Book of the Week
“Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley is a classic novel that continues to engage readers with its thought-provoking themes.
Published in 1818, this book explores the boundaries of science, identity, humanity, moral responsibility, and the outcome of unchecked ambition.
(Sounds like most of our human history.)
The story follows Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist obsessed with creating life. Driven by his desire to play God, he succeeds in his experiment but is horrified by the being he brings to life.
FYI -- many people think Frankenstein was the monster's name, but the actual monster had no name. He had intelligence and even once said to his creator Victor Frankenstein, "I ought to be thy Adam." (very biblical)
Unable to bear the sight of his creation, Victor abandons it.
Which sets in motion a chain of events that leads to tragedy.
Shelley's writing is skillful as it produces a sense of horror and sympathy for the monster, which deals with his existence and seeks acceptance - in a world that rejects him.
Many people can relate...
The novel is a cautionary tale that warns against the dangers of unchecked ambition and not considering consequences.
What are the parallels between Dr. Frankenstein and his creation and humanity and its creation of technology?
Dr. Frankenstein's desire to create life leads him to experiment with science, bringing his creature into existence; humanity's thirst for progress and innovation drives us to develop advanced technologies that shape our world. In both cases, the creators push the boundaries of what is possible.
Driven by ambition, Dr. Frankenstein fails to consider his actions' long-term responsibilities and moral implications.
Humanity sometimes fails to contemplate the ethics of our tech creations, leading to unintended consequences and societal challenges.
The rapid development of AI, for example, raises questions about the displacement of human workers and the impact on social dynamics.
Humanity, like the creature, possesses the capacity for greatness and monstrosity, depending on how we wield our technological creations.
Will we ever learn? I don't know, but time will tell.

Fear of failure
The fear of failure can be paralyzing and demotivating. Remember that making mistakes is a natural part of learning and growth. Reframe failure as an opportunity for improvement and focus on the lessons learned.
